Construction work starts at tuna canning complex in Duqm

Muscat – Construction work has started at a complex for canning tuna in Duqm, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources stated on Wednesday.

The complex will be used for canning tuna, sardines and other seafood products in the Fisheries Industries Zone (FIZ) in Duqm.

The factory is designed to the highest international standards and food safety specifications. Its production capacity will reach 30,000 tonnes annually, subject to future expansion. The complex is scheduled for commercial production by 2024.

The project, which resulted from the Tanfeedh Programme, is in line with Oman Vision 2040. It will contribute to economic diversification by maximising returns from fish landings and localising the value-added chain of fishery products before exporting to global markets, the ministry stated.

‘The project will positively support Oman’s GDP through local supply chains, thus benefitting many small and medium enterprises. The project will also boost investment opportunities in the sector and create job opportunities.’
