Marubeni-led consortium’s green ammonia project in Oman launch likely in Q1 2028 – report

Japanese trading company Marubeni’s green ammonia project in Salalah Free Zone in Dhofar Governorate, Oman, is slated for commercial launch in the first quarter of 2028, Oman Observer reported.

Marubeni is the lead developer in a multinational consortium that seeks to set up ‘SalalaH2’ – a one million tonnes per annum capacity green ammonia project that will use a combination of solar and wind-based renewable energy to power the multibillion-dollar venture, the report said.

Consortium partners include OQ Alternative Energy, part of Oman’s integrated energy company OQ Group, Germany-based global industrial gases giant Linde, and UAE-based Dutco.

Oman Observer had reported in October 2021 that SalalaH2 would target the production of up to 1000 tons per day of green ammonia, utilising OQ’s existing [1,000 Metric Tonnes per Day capacity] ammonia plant in Salalah. It would have an electrolysis facility with a capacity of up to 400 MW to produce green hydrogen, powered by approximately 1-gigawatt (GW) of solar and wind energy, produced either by existing or new facilities.

The renewable power plant would be built by OQ Alternative Energy, according to a September 2021 press statement from Marubeni, which announced the signing of a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) for conducting a technical and commercial
