MHT begins restoration project of Sadah Castle

Muscat – The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism (MHT) has started a restoration and maintenance project of Sadah Castle in the wilayat of Sadah, Dhofar, on Monday.

‘The ministry is currently working with a specialised company to restore and maintain Sadah Castle in order to reopen it to visitors in the coming tourist season,’ a statement said.

The project is in line with MHT’s efforts to preserve Oman’s architectural heritage for future generations. ‘The ministry will follow a systematic plan in the restoration work, including comprehensive maintenance of all parts of the castle, while preserving its Omani character, identity and architectural elements by using traditional materials and manual tools.’

According to the ministry, one of the most important aspects taken into account in the restoration of any monument is the architectural and historical value of the landmark, its geographical location and the proposed use of the site.

According to ministry data, it restored 310 historical monuments and landmarks across several governorates in 2022.

Of the total, 83 are castles, forts and walls, 145 towers, 80 mosques and two ancient houses. Also, an inventory process resulted in the registration of 3,423 archaeological sites.

The number of historical sites registered rose from 7,064 in 2016 to 22,259 in
