Muscat – The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources (MAFWR) is continuing to distribute indigenous goats in various governorates in order to promote local breeds of goats.

Under the project, the ministry is also establishing several small and medium enterprises in the field of livestocks, training and qualifying beneficiaries to breed and propagate local breeds, and promoting local animal products.

Saeed Saif al Amiri, head of the Animal Nutrition Research Department at MAFWR, said, “The project will last for five years and cost RO140,000, funded by the Agriculture and Fisheries Development Fund. In its first phase, the project targeted eight SMEs and distributed 100 genetically improved does and five bucks.”

The project aims to increase the production of red meat from local breeds in the mar-ket, while also increasing the income of breeders by selling kids.

Amiri informed that there are nine breeds of local goats – five breeds in Jabal Akhdar, Batinah goats, desert goats, Musandam desert goats and Dhofari goats.

Oman also has two breeds of indigenous sheep, found in North Batinah and Dhofar.
