SQU inks pact with Chinese firm for AI project

Muscat – Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) signed an agreement on Wednesday with Star Vision, a Chinese satellite and artificial intelligence technology company, to launch the first Omani AI model into space.

Dr Ghazi Ali al Rawas, Dean of Scientific Research at SQU, informed that the agreement aims to localise advanced technologies in the sultanate and raise awareness about space technologies among Omani youth.

According to Rawas, the agreement will provide students of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department of SQU a rare opportunity to gain practical experience in developing AI algorithms, which will be used in the latest AI satellite of Star Vision.

“The algorithm will work to identify shipping vessels in the Sea of Oman for the purpose of protecting Oman’s marine environment. The agreement is a milestone for SQU’s cooperation efforts in research and development with China,” Rawas said.

Represented by its Medical Research Centre, SQU also signed an agreement on Wednesday with Novartis, a leading international pharmaceutical company, for cooperation in combating cardiovascular diseases. Cardiovascular diseases are considered among the top health challenges globally.

The agreement aims to limit the spread of cardiovascular diseases and associated risk factors in Oman by focusing on treating high blood cholesterol cases.
