Leisure: Stinging yet hilarious take on life and society – Gulf Digital News

THE veneer of politeness and good manners are on the cutting block in a new play being staged by the Manama Theatre Club (MTC).

God of Carnage, written by the award-winning Yasmina Reza, debuted on Tuesday and has two more performances, tomorrow and on Saturday, at The British Club - Bahrain at 7.30pm.

The play centres on the aftermath of a fight between two grade school boys.

The boys’ parents meet to have a civilised discussion about the incident.

Alan Raleigh, a corporate lawyer, played by Ahmed Nasimi, and his wife Annette (Hana Ali) visit the home of Veronica Novak (Amy McGavin), an author interested in Africa, and her husband Michael (Ghazi Alshehabi).

Originally written in French, the play was translated into English by Christopher Hampton, and has enjoyed acclaim in productions in both London and New York.

During a Press preview of the play, which is the directorial debut of Ghassan Chemali, the first thing that catches a viewer’s eye is the stage.

Split into two, one half of the Novaks’ apartment is a dark unsettling wall with souvenirs from Ms Novak’s travels to the continent reflecting her obsession with it, while the right side is lighter, filled with books and more emblematic of the cultured
