Vital for onboard computer and infotainment systems as well as important safety features such as anti-lock brakes and stability control, the chips have been in short supply across the globe for much of this year. There have been several contributing factors that have combined to create the perfect storm for automakers including a fire at an automotive chip plant in Japan and the infamous grounding of the Ever Given container ship in the Suez Canal that stretched supply chains. Oil is used to make the plastic in microchips and shortages caused by the big freeze in Texas earlier this year exacerbated the problem.
