Jordan to review seating capacity for public transport amid coronavirus outbreak

DUBAI: Jordan will review implementing a 50 percent seating capacity for public transport with an aim to curb the spread of COVID-19, state news agency Petra reported. The Ministry of Transport would lift the decision if the coronavirus curve flattens by the end of March, Minister Wajeeh Azaizeh told taxi driver committees. He further warned that violating the safety measures and exceeding the capacity limit would not be tolerated. Meanwhile, the country's labor ministry has closed its main building on Monday after coronavirus cases were detected in the ministry - but has told staff to return to work on Tuesday. "The closure will only be at the ministry's main headquarters," ministry's spokesperson Muhammad Zyoudi said, adding that receiving visitors will take place in the ministry's directorates in Amman and other provinces. He further said the ministry would take all the preventive measures needed to ensure public safety. Earlier, Jordanian MPs and protesters demanded the government resign after at least seven coronavirus disease (COVID-19) patients died when a hospital ran out of oxygen. Other MPs went further, signing a petition demanding a vote of no confidence in the government of Prime Minister Bishr Al-Khasawneh, citing its failure to address citizens' woes.
