Ibri records 41mm rainfall in three days

Muscat – Heavy rains will hit the sultanate starting Sunday as a result of a tropical depression in the Arabian Sea.

A statement from Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said that the low pressure over northeast of the Arabian Sea turned into a tropical depression on Saturday. ‘The centre of the depression is 964km from the coast of Oman.’

Satellite images showed the position of the depression near the coast of India (Gujarat) with chances of rain on Sunday and Monday in most parts of Oman.

CAA stated that on Sunday, the tropical depression will start to affect with rains of varying intensity; between 20-60mm in North Sharqiyah, South Sharqiyah, Al Wusta and south of Muscat. ‘Wind speeds are expected to be between 30 and 60kmph.’

On Monday, 30-80mm of rains are expected in North Sharqiyah, South Sharqiyah, North Batinah, South Batinah, Muscat, Dakhliyah, Dhahirah, Buraimi, Al Wusta and Musandam. ‘Winds speeds are expected to be between 40 and 80kmph.’

Meanwhile, 16 people lost their lives and 48 others were rescued in different governorates during the inclement weather experienced in the sultanate from July 7 to July 14.
