Wheat production surges 229% with advanced irrigation

Oman's wheat production increased to 7,119 tonnes in the 2022-23 season, marking a substantial growth of 229% from 2021-22.Muscat – In an agricultural milestone, Oman’s wheat production increased to 7,119 tonnes in the 2022-23 season, marking a substantial growth of 229% from the previous season’s yield of 2,169 tonnes, as per data from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources.

The area under wheat cultivation expanded to 6,359.35 acres, up 160% from the last farming season. The number of farmers engaged in wheat cultivation rose 22% in 2022-23, signifying a growing trend in the sector.

Dhofar led in wheat production with 5,940 tonnes grown on 5,112 acres, accounting for 80% of Oman’s total wheat cultivation area. Dakhliyah dedicated 779 acres to wheat cultivation, Dhahirah 245 acres, North Sharqiyah 66.5 acres,  South Batinah 57 acres, North Batinah 41.1 acres, Buraimi 33.25 acres, Musandam 13 acres, South Sharqiyah 9.5 acres, and Muscat 3 acres.

The surge in production is attributed to the ministry’s initiatives, including adoption of modern irrigation techniques, with a notable shift towards sprinkler systems enhancing crop cultivation and yield efficiency.

Additionally, the ministry has forged a strategic alliance with Oman Flour Mills Company, ensuring the purchase of locally harvested wheat from Omani
