‘Explosion’ in Need for Humanitarian Aid Will Get Worse in Next Few Years, UN Chief Says

The United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Mark Lowcock said the "explosion" in needs for humanitarian aid will get worse unless world leaders get to the root causes of suffering.

In an interview with the Associated Press, Lowcock said there has been a "failure of the leading powers" to address causes of migration or hunger, like political conflicts, extremism, climate change, corruption and violence.

"If the world wants to see less humanitarian suffering, you have to deal with the causes of that suffering," Lowcock told the AP. "If you tackle the causes, you can make progress, you can improve people's lives."
