How The Live Event Ticketing Industry Plans Its Regulatory Future

Ticketing companies, resellers, and industry professionals gathered on October 18th at the annual Coalition For Ticket Fairness dinner. The Coalition for Ticket Fairness works in New York State to help regulators hear opinions from participants in the ticketing industry beyond just those of the biggest companies with the most well-endowed lobbyists. CTF's dinner, held annually in New York City is where friendships are made or renewed. Here, everyone has an opinion and the goal of finding common goals for the new year's ticketing laws. This year the dinner included a talk by Senator James Skoufis of New York State. Skoufis led last year's push to amend New York's ticketing bill. He plans to spearhead the new bill which is scheduled for consideration in 2022. As Skoufis often points out, what New York does, others follow. New York was one of the first states to require tickets be freely transferable. This year's bill will likely also consider mandatory refunds when requested for shows which are cancelled or postponed and more publicly available data on whether an event is sold out or there are more tickets held back by the promoter to sell later.
