When Debra Haaland travelled north in 2016 to join protests against the construction of the controversial Dakota Access Pipeline “” rustling up green chilli and tortillas for demonstrators “” she probably didn't expect five years later to be making her case to pro-fossil fuel senators to be the next secretary of the interior.

As a congresswoman, Haaland has been an outspoken environmentalist: she was an early supporter of the Green New Deal, "wholeheartedly“ backed a ban on fracking and drilling on public lands, lashed out at fossil fuel production and lobbied hard for the expansion of
