Maritime Heritage Festival in Sur receives over 72,000 visitors

Sur – As many as 72,267 people visited the Maritime Heritage Festival in Sur, South Sharqiyah, in the first eight days of the event, according to the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism (MHT). The festival kicked off on February 3 and will continue till February 19.

In a statement, MHT said, ‘The festival aims to stimulate local tourism, promote heritage and tourism sites, consolidate Oman’s position on the tourism map, and create added value for the local community by supporting small and medium enterprises while introducing and promoting the sultanate’s maritime heritage.’

The festival activities and events are being conducted at the Maritime Heritage Village, all highlighting the maritime heritage that Sur is famous for.

The maritime village also has a corner dedicated to handicrafts related to maritime heritage, folklore seminars, a café, a theatre for recreational and cultural events and activities, and folk games and performances of marine-related arts.

Other programmes on the festival agenda include activities such as windsurfing, sailing, a fishing competition, a seminar on maritime heritage, a traditional boat race, traditional Omani sports, and kite flying.
