COP28 President-Designate highlights Japan’s role in energy transition on official visit during Tokyo GX Week

- “The UAE and Japan have a special and close relationship that goes back over 50 years and is underpinned by mutual trust, economic cooperation and the UAE’s unwavering commitment to Japan’s energy security.”

- COP28 President-Designate, Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, meets Fumio Kishida, Prime Minister of Japan, to discuss mutual cooperation in a range of areas, including the energy transition.

- Visit includes signing of joint declaration of intent (JDI) between the UAE Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology and Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, designed to enhance cooperation between the two nations on climate action.

- The JDI envisages the development of a global green energy hub between the two nations.

- President-Designate also meets Yoko Kamikawa, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yasutoshi Nishimura, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, Shintaro Ito, Minister of the Environment, Mr. Yukio Kane, Global CEO of JERA, and Mr. Maeda Tadashi, Governor of Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC).

- Dr. Al Jaber also co-chaired inaugural meeting of the UAE-Japan Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

- President-Designate highlights importance of Asian nations to energy transition, with region expected to be responsible for two-thirds of additional energy demand by 2045.
