Oman revises GHG reduction target to 21% by 2030

In a major development towards net zero by 2050, Oman has revised its target for reducing net greenhouse gas emissions to 21% by 2030.Muscat – In a major development towards net zero by 2050, Oman has significantly revised its target for reducing net greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to 21% by 2030.

The revision is a key highlight of an update to Oman’s Second Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) report, which is a climate action plan to cut emissions and adapt to climate impacts by signatories to the Paris Agreement.

The new target now aims for a 21% reduction from the business-as-usual scenario by 2030 (7% committed and 14% conditional). This is a substantial increase from the previous NDC target of 7% in total.

Of the targeted 21% reduction, two-thirds are conditional on several factors, according to the report, including international climate financing, technology transfers, activation of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, and support for capacity building programmes.

Oman has already identified several ongoing and upcoming projects that are set to account for the country’s targeted emissions reduction by 2030. The main approach for achieving these reductions will involve the implementation of energy efficiency measures and the adoption of green electrification technologies.
